Statements contained herein and throughout this website have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. These products are not intended to diagnose or treat or cure or prevent disease.
To put it more specifically, The Surly Herbalist is in no way diagnosing, treating, curing or preventing any condition or disease you may or may not have and we are not suggesting that our products are a substitute for proper medical care. Our cosmetic claims are purely based on our own experiences, careful research on each ingredient and their commonly known benefits and properties, and the experiences of those who have helped sample our formulations.
While we strive to use the gentlest, purest
ingredients we can, The Surly Herbalist is NOT responsible for any sensitivity or
reaction to any ingredient that you may experience, however unlikely.
Each human being is unique and there is always someone who is sensitive
to even the mildest ingredient. Always read the ingredients list of ANY
product you intend to put on the skin, in your hair or into your body and if you have
any concerns, apply a test patch first to determine if a sensitivity
does exist. If that product causes irritation or negative reaction,
discontinue use of that product. This goes for any brand of any product
anywhere. Your health and safety comes first.
SAFETY WITH ESSENTIAL OILS AND HERBS - ALL Surly Herbalist products are made with essential oils and/or natural botanicals and herbs. Most people should not have issue with the ingredients we use or our essential oyl concentrations which are at or below IFRA maximum usage rates. There are however, some individuals with certain health concerns that can preclude them from using our products. If you are pregnant, nursing, or are under the care of a health care professional for an illness or medical condition, please consult your doctor, midwife, medical professional etc...to make sure the topical use of any herb infusion is safe to use.
That being said, it is important to remember, pregnant and nursing mamas have specific health needs and concerns. While there is plenty of information out there from seemingly reputable sources on topical herbal skincare products being safe or unsafe during pregnancy, it is ALWAYS best to abstain from use until you talk with your healthcare provider. The same goes for folks with other health issues.
SAFETY DURING USE: Our products are very emollient-rich and contain natural oils and butters which can leave your skin temporarily slick and/or slippery. Oils can take time to soak in and in case of accidental spill or even normal use, surfaces can remain slippery until properly cleaned. The Surly Herbalist is NOT responsible for any mishaps arising from the natural properties of these products and slippery conditions that may arise from its use or misuse.
The Surly Herbalist products are for EXTERNAL
USE ONLY. Please do not use them in any bodily orifice or in your eyes.
It is also not meant to be ingested and only our lip balms are suitable for the lips. Please
follow directions on all packaging materials.
Many of our products are packaged in GLASS bottles or jars. While we feel glass is superior over plastic, there is always a risk of broken glass should one of our bottles succumb to the forces of gravity and fall. We are not responsible for any injuries sustained should you come in contact with broken glass. Always handle with care. Should a vessel break for any reason, it is always advisable to chuck the whole thing instead of trying to salvage product as shards of the packaging can contaminate the remaining product and pose a safety risk if used.
SAFETY AROUND CHILDREN: Keep these products out of reach of very small children who may not know how to use and handle the products properly.
SAFETY AROUND PETS: many of our products contain essential oils that are unsafe for use on pets, so unless a product was designed for your pet, do not use it on them. Certain essential oils can be extremely toxic to them and are meant for use only on humans.
By completing this sale, you agree to contact us immediately if you have any issues regarding your order so that we may promptly resolve them.

From the earliest of times there was the role of the healer. The herbalist. The "Wise Woman". She possessed knowledge of healing herbs and botanicals which was handed down from previous generations back. As a healer, the wise woman was usually the first stop for the average person when they were sick or had a health issue to address. Of course in the Medieval and Renaissance era, the wise woman may have been called a witch or a heretic and discouraged from practicing her art as women were not allowed a profession in that time. This of course would make any herbalist surly as hell!
It is up to us to cultivate our garden.
